The family of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson Wafula Chebukati has disclosed that he succumbed to a cardiac arrest after battling a recurrent cancerous brain tumor.
Speaking to the press on Monday, the family revealed that Chebukati had initially been diagnosed with the tumor and underwent surgery in Germany. However, the tumor recurred in April 2024, prompting a second operation. Despite the procedures, another recurrence was detected in December 2024, leading to further medical intervention.
By February 12, 2025, his condition had worsened, and he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). He suffered a fatal cardiac arrest on February 20.
The family dismissed rumors that he had been declared clinically dead earlier, emphasizing that they were not informed of such developments.
A post-mortem examination is set to be conducted ahead of his burial on March 8, 2025, at his Kitale home.
