Kenyan Police Officer Killed in Haiti During Security Operation

Port-au-Prince, Haiti – A Kenyan police officer deployed under the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSSM) in Haiti has died after sustaining injuries during an operation in the Artibonite region.

In a statement dated February 24, MSSM Force Commander Godfrey Otunge confirmed that the officer was wounded in an operation at Pont Sonde and was airlifted to Aspen Level 2 Hospital for treatment. However, he succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, February 23.

“Today, Sunday, February 23rd, 2025, one of our MSS officers from the Kenyan contingent was injured during an operation in Ségur – Savien, in the Artibonite department. The officer was immediately airlifted to Aspen Level 2 Hospital but, unfortunately, succumbed to the injuries,” the statement read.

Earlier Reports on MSS Casualties

The incident comes just days after Commander Otunge dismissed rumors that MSS forces had suffered casualties in Kenscoff, an area previously reported as a gang stronghold.

Otunge described the claims as false propaganda spread by individuals aiming to mislead the public. He emphasized that, contrary to the reports, MSS and the Police Nationale d’Haïti (PNH) had successfully reclaimed and secured a critical repeater station in Kenscoff.

“I want to reiterate that MSS has not lost any personnel in any gang confrontation in Kenscoff. On the contrary, we, alongside the PNH, have secured key locations, ensuring improved security in the area,” he stated.

MSS and Haiti Police Collaboration

Dismissing further rumors, Otunge reassured that the MSS and Haiti’s police force are working in full coordination and dismissed claims of friendly fire incidents between the two forces.

“The working relationship between myself and the Director General of PNH, Normil Rameau, remains strong and collaborative. We plan and execute joint security operations efficiently to maximize impact,” he added.

Kenya’s Continued Commitment in Haiti

Kenya has increased its deployment to Haiti, with an additional 217 officers joining the first contingent of 400 officers sent in June 2024. The reinforcements include medical personnel, mechanics, and communications experts to support the mission’s objectives.

Commander Otunge called on Haitians to support the MSS and PNH, reaffirming the mission’s commitment to restoring security and stability in the country.

“The MSS remains focused on its mandate to assist Haiti in regaining peace and security. We urge the public to continue supporting and collaborating with us in this mission,” he said.
