KEPSHA Chair Johnson Nzioka Dies in Tragic Road Accident on Mombasa Road

Nzioka, who was also the headteacher of Donholm Primary School in Nairobi, was involved in a fatal crash along Mombasa Road near Athi River. Reports indicate that his car rammed into a trailer while trying to avoid another vehicle. He sustained severe injuries and later succumbed.

 

Tributes Pour In

 

Following the news of his passing, prominent leaders expressed their condolences.

 

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino mourned Nzioka, describing him as a personal friend.

“I wish to express my sincere condolences to the family of Johnson Nzioka, Headteacher of Donholm Primary School, whose car rammed into a trailer along Mombasa Road. Rest in peace, my friend,” Owino posted on social media.

 

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko also paid tribute, writing:

 

“KEPSHA Chairman Johnson Nzioka dies in a tragic road accident in Athi River, Machakos. May his soul rest in peace.”

 

A Legacy in Education Leadership

 

Nzioka was a seasoned educationist with over 20 years of experience as a headteacher in various Nairobi schools.

 

As KEPSHA Chair, he led over 24,000 primary school heads and eight million learners nationwide. Before assuming leadership in 2021, he had played key roles in co-curricular development, serving as the Sub-County Chairman of the Kenya Primary Schools Sports Association and later as the National Vice-Chairperson in 2015.

 

His commitment to advancing education was further demonstrated in his role as the Organising Secretary of the Federation of East African Primary Schools Headteachers.

 

Upon taking over KEPSHA from Nicholas Gathemia in March 2021, Nzioka pledged to foster dialogue and empower educators to enhance primary education across Kenya.

 

“I promise to lead with dialogue and negotiation, ensuring that our members are empowered to nurture education across primary schools,” he stated during his inauguration speech.

Nzioka’s sudden passing is a huge loss to Kenya’s education sector. His leadership and passion for academic excellence will be remembered by many.

 

Investigations into the accident are ongoing.
