Sakaja Engages Persons With Disabilities Following Hawking Ban on Walkways

Commitment to Inclusivity and Order in Nairobi

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has taken proactive steps to address concerns raised by Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) following the enforcement of a ban on hawking along pedestrian walkways. In a meeting held at City Hall, Sakaja engaged with PWDs who are informal traders to find a sustainable solution to their grievances.

To ensure fair representation, the governor directed their leadership to engage with Nairobi County officials to explore alternative solutions that balance business opportunities with urban order. The discussions included Chief Officers and directors from key county departments, highlighting the county government’s commitment to inclusivity.

Designated Trading Spaces for All Traders

Following deliberations, it was agreed that all hawkers, including those with disabilities, must operate from designated areas. This policy aims to create a safe, organized, and business-friendly environment in the city while ensuring that every trader has an equal opportunity to conduct business in an orderly manner.

Recognizing the mobility challenges faced by some of the traders, Governor Sakaja announced the provision of 18 wheelchairs to assist them in carrying out their businesses effectively. This move aligns with his commitment to ensuring inclusivity and supporting PWDs in Nairobi.

Roads Recarpeting Project for a Cleaner, Greener Nairobi

Meanwhile, the Nairobi City County Government is actively implementing roads recarpeting projects across the Central Business District (CBD) to enhance mobility and create a more pedestrian-friendly city. This initiative is part of Governor Sakaja’s manifesto to improve Nairobi’s infrastructure and promote a greener, cleaner urban environment.

Key roads such as Kimathi Lane, Haile Selassie Road, and Mfangano Lane have been prioritized due to their deteriorating conditions, which have been causing delays, inconvenience, and safety risks for commuters and pedestrians. The ongoing rehabilitation will not only enhance traffic flow but also improve road safety and mobility for all city dwellers.

Additionally, the county government is constructing new roads in various Nairobi City County wards, funded through the Ward Development Fund. These improvements will feature widened lanes, designated pedestrian walkways, and enhanced traffic management systems, ensuring a safer and more efficient transport network.

Governor Sakaja’s Vision for Nairobi

Governor Sakaja remains steadfast in his mission to transform Nairobi into a well-organized, inclusive, and accessible city. By addressing concerns from PWD traders while implementing infrastructural upgrades, his administration is striving to balance economic activities with urban order and improved mobility.
