Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua Backs Raila Odinga for African Union Commission Leadership

Kenya’s former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has publicly endorsed opposition leader Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship, ahead of the continental body’s pivotal elections scheduled for February 15–16 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

In a social media statement on Friday, Gachagua praised Odinga as the most qualified candidate to lead the AUC, emphasizing his decades of political experience and commitment to Pan-African ideals. “Raila Odinga’s visionary leadership and dedication to Africa’s progress make him the ideal choice to steer the AUC. Our continent deserves nothing less than excellence,” he declared.

Gachagua highlighted Odinga’s potential to bridge divides between Anglophone and Francophone African nations, fostering continental unity while advancing shared economic and developmental goals. He also underscored the significance of Kenya’s influence in regional diplomacy, stating, “Electing Odinga would affirm Kenya’s role as a key player in shaping Africa’s future and advancing collaborative governance.”

The AUC elections, set to take place during the 37th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government, will see Odinga compete against Djibouti’s Foreign Minister Mahmoud Ali Youssouf and Madagascar’s former Foreign Affairs Minister Richard Randriamandrato. Voting will proceed via secret ballot until one candidate secures a two-thirds majority (33 votes) from the AU’s 55 member states.

Gachagua further argued that Odinga’s leadership would amplify Africa’s global voice, citing his advocacy for equitable trade partnerships and climate resilience. “His victory would symbolize a united Africa, ready to tackle challenges with solidarity and strategic foresight,” he added.

The outcome of the election is anticipated to shape the AUC’s priorities, including conflict resolution, economic integration, and sustainable development across the continent.
