Uganda’s CDF Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba Threatens Police CID Chief with Arrest

Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has sparked fresh controversy by threatening to arrest Maj. Tom Magambo, the head of the police Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), along with his entire team.

In a statement issued on Sunday, February 23, Muhoozi accused Magambo of abusing his power and carrying out politically motivated arrests.

“Tom Magambo and his department will be the first to face arrest today. He knows exactly what he has done,” Muhoozi declared. He further warned that more arrests would follow and hinted that the CID would be the first agency to be targeted.

Muhoozi Asserts Control Over Security Forces

The army general, who is also the son of President Yoweri Museveni, asserted his authority over both the Uganda Police Force (UPF) and Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF). He warned that anyone challenging his command would face consequences.

“I am in charge of both UPDF and UPF as CDF. Anyone who has a problem with that will soon find out,” he cautioned.

Tensions with Opposition Leaders

Muhoozi also escalated tensions with opposition figures, particularly supporters of Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), the leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP). He issued a chilling warning against those wearing NUP-affiliated clothing, stating that security forces would crack down on them mercilessly.

“From today, anyone found wearing a NUP uniform will face serious consequences—no questions asked!” he warned.

Additionally, Muhoozi took aim at veteran opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, suggesting that he might send him back to the General Court Martial, depending on his actions.

Reactions and Rising Political Tensions

Muhoozi’s remarks have raised concerns about Uganda’s political landscape and the growing influence of military figures in governance. While the Ugandan government has not officially responded, opposition supporters and legal analysts have condemned the statements, warning that they could fuel political unrest.

With Uganda’s 2026 general elections approaching, Muhoozi’s latest declarations have further deepened divisions within the country’s leadership, leaving many wondering what his next move will be.
