Tragedy struck in Gituamba area, Gitaru, Kiambu County, after a devastating fire claimed the lives of three children aged 6, 4, and 3 months. The blaze, which broke out on the evening of Wednesday, February 19, reduced eight houses to ashes.
According to preliminary reports, the fire started at around 8:15 PM, prompting frantic efforts from neighbors and rescuers to contain the flames and prevent further destruction.
However, after successfully putting out the inferno, rescuers discovered the charred remains of the three young children who had been trapped inside one of the houses. Witnesses recounted that the 6- and 4-year-old siblings died while attempting to open the door, while the youngest, a three-month-old baby girl, perished in the bedroom.
Authorities revealed that the parents were not at home at the time of the incident, having left their children locked inside.
Investigators have since launched a probe to determine the cause of the fire, which remains unknown.
This tragic incident comes just days after another fire outbreak near Pettans Technical College in Kiambu Town, where property worth an undisclosed amount was destroyed. Emergency response teams, including personnel from the Kenya Red Cross and Kiambu County, managed to contain the blaze with additional support from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and Nairobi County firefighters.
