Uhuru described Chebukati as a resilient leader who played a crucial role in shaping Kenya’s electoral landscape.
“Throughout his time in office, he played a pivotal role in shaping our nation’s electoral landscape, often navigating intricate challenges with remarkable resilience,” Uhuru said in his condolence message.

Former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka also expressed his condolences, highlighting Chebukati’s impact on Kenya’s electoral system.
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi praised Chebukati as a man of integrity and conviction who upheld democracy with diligence and commitment.
“I will always remember him as a man of resilience and wisdom, who navigated challenging moments with courage, fairness, and an unshakable commitment to transparency. His contributions to electoral governance will remain a lasting inspiration to those who champion justice and good leadership,” Mudavadi stated.
IEBC Recognizes Chebukati’s Legacy
IEBC CEO Hussein Marjan reflected on Chebukati’s tenure, emphasizing his impact on electoral governance.
“He was appointed and assumed office on January 17, 2017, serving until January 17, 2023. He became the first IEBC Chairperson to successfully complete the six-year constitutional term,” Marjan noted.
Chebukati’s leadership saw IEBC win international recognition, including the Election Management Award and a runner-up position in the Electoral Ergonomic Award at the 19th International Electoral Awards Ceremony in Lisbon, Portugal, in 2023.
“The IEBC family has lost a great leader—one who was full of humor, listened keenly to critical issues, and understood the sensitivity of his office,” Marjan added.
