CS Ogamba Warns Against Arson After Fire Destroys Two Dormitories in Kisii

Kisii, Kenya – February 17, 2025

Two dormitories at Nyosia Mixed Secondary School in Nyaribari Chache were reduced to ashes following a fire that broke out on Saturday night. The incident left at least 150 students without their personal belongings, though no casualties were reported.

By Sunday afternoon, the cause of the fire had not yet been determined, but authorities had already launched investigations.

Education Cabinet Secretary Migos Ogamba, accompanied by Nyaribari Chache MP Zaheer Jhanda and Kisii University Vice Chancellor Prof. Nathan Ogechi, visited the school on Sunday to assess the damage.

CS Ogamba expressed his sadness over the incident and called for a thorough investigation. He hinted that the fire might have been an act of arson and warned that anyone found responsible, whether a student or an outsider, would face serious consequences.

“Arson is a grave offense, and the government will take stern action against those involved,” Ogamba stated.

He urged students to remain vigilant and protect school infrastructure, emphasizing that the government has no funds to rebuild dormitories destroyed by fire.

“It is unfortunate that parents will now bear the financial burden of replacing what was lost,” he added.

MP Jhanda condemned the suspected arson, describing it as unacceptable. While acknowledging the damage, he expressed relief that no students were injured. He also donated mattresses to support the affected learners.

Meanwhile, Prof. Ogechi urged school administrators to enhance security measures and prevent further destruction of property.

Authorities continue to investigate the incident to establish the cause and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
