Mandera, Kenya – An Assistant Chief in Mandera has been arrested for allegedly assisting two terror suspects in obtaining Kenyan identification documents. The suspects were reportedly planning to abduct foreign workers involved in a sewer line construction project in Mandera town.
According to a police report, the Assistant Chief played a role in acquiring an acknowledgment of registration slip (ID waiting card) for the suspects.
Security officials identified the administrator as Yussuf Maalim Issak, the Assistant Chief of Bula Power sub-location in Mandera Township. Anti-terrorism officers arrested him for his involvement in the illegal processing of IDs for two individuals suspected of being linked to the Al-Shabaab terror group. The suspects were identified as Isack Mohammed Abdi and Noor Yakub Ali.
Investigations revealed that Isaac Abdi Mohamed, also known as Kharan Abdi Hassan, had recently entered Kenya from El-Ade, Somalia. He had forged multiple documents to present himself as a Kenyan citizen. Detectives further established that he had planned to pay Sh100,000 to a local associate to facilitate the abduction of targeted individuals. The victims were then to be transported to El-Ade at a fee of Sh300,000.
A security operation conducted on Tuesday morning led to the arrest of Noor Yakub Ali in Metameta, Mandera. Both suspects are now in custody and are undergoing interrogation.
Authorities have confirmed that the two will be charged under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) for their association with a terrorist organization.
Security agencies have assured the public of continued efforts to safeguard the region and prevent terrorist activities.
