Juja MP George Koimburi Escapes Police on Motorbike

Juja Member of Parliament (MP) George Koimburi managed to evade police officers outside Kiambu Law Courts by fleeing on a motorbike.

The legislator, who was flanked by supporters and fellow politicians, had just addressed the media regarding the extension of his cash bail. However, as his supporters chanted slogans, he took advantage of the commotion to escape, with police officers in pursuit.

Court Proceedings and Charges

Earlier, Koimburi had requested the court to excuse him from entering a plea on charges of Contempt of Court, but his appeal was denied. Consequently, he was required to either plead guilty or not guilty and proceed with the trial.

The additional charge stemmed from his failure to attend a previous court hearing, prompting the prosecution to take further legal action.

Koimburi was initially charged on April 26, 2021, with falsifying academic documents and was granted a Ksh. 100,000 bond. However, after missing a scheduled court appearance, a warrant for his arrest was issued on September 16, 2021, leading to the forfeiture of his bail.

Following his recent arraignment, the court granted him a Ksh. 200,000 cash bail. The prosecution team is led by Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Everlyn Onunga and Principal Prosecution Counsel Benjamin Kelwon.

Details of the Forgery Case

Koimburi faces six charges, including three counts of forgery and three counts of uttering false documents.

According to the prosecution, he is accused of forging a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) certificate between November and December 1994. He is also alleged to have falsified certificates from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), including one for the East African Universities Accession Project and another for academic excellence from the School of Human Resource Development.

The prosecution further claims that on March 8, 2021, he knowingly presented the forged documents to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), falsely claiming they were issued by KNEC and JKUAT.

Koimburi has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
