In a series of significant leadership changes, President William Ruto has announced the revocation of several high-profile appointments, effective January 2025. The changes, detailed in official gazette notices, are part of ongoing adjustments within key government bodies.
Revocation of Joe Owaka Ager’s Appointment
In a gazette notice dated January 28, 2025, President Ruto announced the revocation of Joe Owaka Ager’s appointment as Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Pyrethrum Processing Company of Kenya. This decision follows Ager’s removal from the National Mining Corporation Chairmanship in 2023.
Ager’s removal from the pyrethrum board will take effect on January 31, 2025. In 2023, President Ruto appointed Joseph Lagat as the new chairperson of the National Mining Corporation, with Lagat’s term set to conclude in October 2024.
Kiema Mwandia’s Removal from Tanathi Water Works Board
In another significant move, President Ruto revoked the appointment of Dr. Kiemi Mwandia as a member of the Tanathi Water Works Development Agency Board, effective January 31, 2025. This change was also announced in a separate gazette notice issued on the same day.
Following Mwandia’s removal, Cabinet Secretary for Water, Eric Mugaa, appointed Nicholas Wambua Muthangya to the board. Muthangya’s three-year term begins on January 31, 2025.
Tourism and Wildlife Sector Appointments
In the tourism sector, Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano appointed Nancy Waturi Mathenge as a member of the Kenya Wildlife Service Board of Trustees, effective January 31, 2025. Mathenge’s term will last three years. Additionally, the appointments of Peter Fredrick Moll and Edward Norton were revoked as part of the reshuffle.
Education and MSMEs Sector Appointments
In the education sector, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba revoked Bob Ndubi’s appointment as a member of the Council of Kisii University, effective January 31, 2025.
Meanwhile, in the MSMEs sector, Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya appointed Martha Wanjiru Miano to the Board of Directors of the Micro and Small Enterprise Authority (MSEA). Her three-year term begins on January 31, 2025. Oparanya also revoked Adan Sheikh Abdullahi’s appointment.
Defence Sector Appointments
In the defense sector, Cabinet Secretary for Defence Soipan Tuya announced several new appointments to the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Pension Appeals Committee. The newly appointed members include Col. (Dr.) C. O. Ondego, Col. S. C. Yator, Col. (Rtd.) L. L. Muluvi, Col. (Rtd.) M. M. Nchuurai, and Elly Onger. Their appointments, which are effective January 31, 2025, will last for three years.
