Detectives Investigate Patient Murder at Kenyatta National Hospital

Homicide detectives have been stationed at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) for a second day to investigate the brutal murder of a patient in his hospital bed. The incident occurred on Friday morning, and the investigation is ongoing to uncover the motive and identify the perpetrator.

The detectives have instructed the hospital management not to discharge patients who were in wards adjacent to the crime scene. They aim to interview everyone who was near the area and secure all potential evidence.

On Saturday, investigators questioned a patient who shared a ward with the deceased, Gilbert Kinyua, and collected DNA samples for analysis. This patient is considered a person of interest in the case. Nurses, security personnel, and other staff members were also interrogated as detectives reviewed additional CCTV footage from the hospital.

Kinyua, a 39-year-old man admitted to KNH on December 11, 2024, for a cerebral disorder, was found dead in Ward 7B with a slit throat. His body was discovered on Friday morning, and the scene was covered in blood. Police confirmed that another patient in the same ward, who was being treated for a similar condition, was too weak to provide any useful information about the incident.

A nurse on duty reported that she conducted a routine check at 3 a.m. on Friday and found everything in order. However, upon returning to the ward later, she discovered Kinyua’s lifeless body. Detectives recovered a blood-stained kitchen knife believed to be the murder weapon, which had been thrown out of a nearby window.

The hospital’s main CCTV cameras were not operational at the time of the incident, complicating the investigation. Detectives are now reconstructing the crime scene and reviewing footage from other areas of the facility.

In a statement, KNH expressed deep sadness over the tragic incident and assured the public of its commitment to patient safety. Acting CEO Dr. William Sigilai confirmed that the hospital is cooperating fully with law enforcement and has launched an internal investigation.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the patient’s family during this difficult time. The safety and well-being of our patients, staff, and visitors remain our top priority,” Dr. Sigilai stated.

The investigation continues as detectives work to piece together the events leading to Kinyua’s murder.
