lawmaker from President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has sparked speculation about a potential political reunion with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua ahead of the 2027 general elections. Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa suggested that Gachagua could rejoin Ruto’s camp if he demonstrates “reformed conduct,” though not necessarily in his former role.
Speaking during a church service at AIC Kapsang in Uasin Gishu County on Sunday, Barasa claimed Ruto intends to build a “strong, inclusive coalition” for his re-election bid. While acknowledging Gachagua’s 2022 ouster as deputy president, he left the door open for the former ally’s return in a different capacity.
“If needed, we’ll bring Rigathi back. He may no longer be fit for the deputy president’s office, but he can still contribute as a member of our coalition. By 2027, we hope he’ll have reflected and changed. We could reinstate his UDA membership and assign him a suitable role,” Barasa stated.
Gachagua’s Stance: “No Return”
However, insiders close to Gachagua insist he has ruled out reuniting with Ruto, citing bitterness over his impeachment in October 2023. The former deputy president has accused Ruto of orchestrating his removal despite his pivotal role in securing Mount Kenya’s votes during the 2022 elections.
“Mount Kenya trusted Ruto because of me. His betrayal means our region can’t support him again,” Gachagua reportedly told allies. Instead, he is said to be exploring alliances with opposition figures, including Wiper’s Kalonzo Musyoka, DAP-K’s Eugene Wamalwa, and Narc-Kenya’s Martha Karua.
Legal Hurdles and Kingmaker Ambitions
Barred from holding public office due to his impeachment, Gachagua appears focused on becoming a political “kingmaker.” Recent meetings at his Nyeri home with regional leaders suggest efforts to form a bloc aimed at countering Ruto’s influence in Mount Kenya.
Analysts note that while Gachagua’s return to UDA seems unlikely, his ability to mobilize voters could make him a strategic asset. “His impeachment limits his options, but his grassroots network remains strong. Ruto’s camp may want to neutralize his opposition,” said political analyst Miriam Were.
As 2027 approaches, the prospect of shifting alliances continues to shape Kenya’s political landscape, with both Ruto and Gachagua maneuvering to consolidate support.
