Kenyan Police Arrest UPDF Officers for Harassing Fishermen on Lake Victoria

Kenyan authorities have arrested two Ugandan People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) officers for allegedly harassing Kenyan fishermen on Lake Victoria. This marks a notable shift from past incidents, where UPDF officers often intimidated Kenyan fishermen without facing consequences.

The arrests come amid growing tensions over territorial boundaries and fishing rights on the shared lake. Kenyan fishermen have long accused Ugandan forces of unlawful incursions, confiscating equipment, and disrupting their livelihoods. The recent action by Kenyan police sends a strong message against such violations and underscores the government’s commitment to protecting its citizens operating within the country’s waters.

Photos of the arrested officers have been released, highlighting the seriousness of the incident. Authorities have vowed to ensure fair treatment for Kenyan fishermen and to address any further breaches of sovereignty.

This move is expected to foster better cross-border relations while safeguarding the rights of local communities dependent on Lake Victoria for their survival.
