Gachagua Claims Ruto Offered Ksh 2 Billion for Resignation Amid Impeachment Fallout

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has alleged that President William Ruto proposed a Ksh 2 billion exit package in exchange for his resignation from office. The claims were made during an interview with Western Kenya radio stations on Tuesday, February 4, where Gachagua detailed what he described as a high-stakes negotiation with the Head of State.

According to Gachagua, Ruto’s offer included financial compensation, continued security, a government salary, and assurances of eligibility to seek future political office. “The President told me, ‘Resign, and I will give you two billion shillings. You can go home, rest, pursue personal interests, retain security, collect a salary, and even return to politics later,’” Gachagua recounted.

The former deputy president, however, stated he rejected the proposal, citing distrust in Ruto’s intentions. “How can someone allegedly scheming against you dictate your exit? If they’re planning your downfall, their suggested path is the one you must avoid,” he asserted.

Gachagua also dismissed perceptions of political ambition, emphasizing his indifference to holding public office. “Some MPs urged me to resign to ‘preserve’ my career, but I’m not obsessed with power. Serving isn’t about titles for me,” he added.

The allegations emerge against the backdrop of Gachagua’s impeachment on October 8, 2024, following a National Assembly vote that saw 281 lawmakers back his removal over charges of money laundering, gross misconduct, and abuse of office. The Senate later upheld the decision, cementing his ouster.

While Gachagua’s claims have stirred public debate, President Ruto’s office has yet to issue an official response. Political analysts suggest the remarks could deepen rifts within Kenya’s leadership, raising questions about accountability and transparency in governance.

As the story unfolds, observers await further developments, including potential legal or parliamentary scrutiny of the allegations.
