Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe is arguably the man of the hour as he leads the country in fighting the coronavirus pandemic. Kenyans have been praising his efforts to curb the pandemic and his daily updates to the country.
He is, however, no stranger to the political limelight as his role in the arms of government date back to the Kibaki era. Before that, he worked at Standard Group’s advertising department between 1987 and 1989 while also doing private business. Kagwe rose up to the position of commercial director at the media house before launching a small independent publishing house and a public relations company later.

His political career began in 2002 when he became the Mukurwe-ini Constituency MP on a National Alliance Rainbow Coalition (NARC) party ticket.
Kagwe’s first role in government came in 2005 when former president Mwai Kibaki appointed him to be Minister for Information Communication and Technology (ICT).
This saw Kenya ditching satellite technology and embraced Fibre Optic Cables that would see a drastic drop in call tariffs and increase in internet speeds during his time.
His era also saw the launch of Safaricom’s M-PESA, the first-ever mobile money transfer system in the world.
In 2007, he lost the constituency seat to Kabando Wa Kabando but later resurfaced in 2013 to be Nyeri’s first Senator.
Kagwe is married to his lovely wife, Ann Wanjiku Mutahi. Together they are blessed with four children namely, Kagwe, Njoroge, Nyawira, and Kahumburu.
Today, his efforts are recognized worldwide in the fight to stop the spread of COVID-19. Kenyans, too, have been praising his efforts and also applauded his health CAS Dr Mercy Mwangangi.
