What Announcement will President Kenyatta Make Today?

President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to make an announcement today which may mean stricter measures for Mombasa, Kwale, and Kilifi counties.

A review directive on the COVID-19 measures in the three counties was issued by Interior CS Fred Matiang’i on April 22 following a rise in infections in the three counties.

Matiang’ said in the announcement that the results of the review will be announced in the next 48 hours, which ends today.

It is expected that the president will extend the cessation of movement in the hotspot counties. The cessation was announced on April 6, 2020, and was meant to last for three weeks to avoid spreading of the disease to other counties.

Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho, however, argued that the county residents were defiant and did not want to shelve social practices that put them at risk.

My people want to share meals and eat together on one plate. This is dangerous. We have informed them that they have to part with some practices for some time, but they don’t want to listen. You can avoid going into the hospital by following directives but the more you move around you spread Coronavirus. I told them that if they do not stop Coronavirus, it will stop them

Ali Hassan Joho

He is now pushing for a total lockdown in the county as the residents keep flouting the safety measures.

I fail to understand why people do not understand that this disease is real and it kills. It is out on our doorsteps knocking and we are busy opening for it to come in

Ali Hassan Joho
