Orange Democratic Movement leader Raila Odinga paid his respects to former President Daniel Moi on Monday in a similar manner done by his father Jaramogi Oginga Odinga when Mzee Jomo Kenyatta died in 1978.
The ODM leader, accompanied by his wife, removed his mask before wielding a black fly-whisk over the body and waving it six times before bowing.
This ritual was made famous by his father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, during the viewing of the body of Kenya’s founding President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta.
Similar to that of Raila’s ritual, Jaramogi waved a fly-whisk over the body of Jomo Kenyatta several times. Oginga, however, chanted some words while waving the fly whisk.
Raila disclosed in an interview that Jaramogi was mourning his longtime friend saying “They took him from me, they took him from me,”.
Viewing of Mzee Moi’s body concluded today at 5 pm. The memorial service of the former president will be held at Nyayo Stadium on February 11 before being buried on February 12, at his Kabarak home in Nakuru County.
