The Landlords and Tenants Association has ordered all tenants not to pay rent due to the COVID-19 negative impact on the economy.
LATAK cited challenges occasioned by the closure of businesses and jobs as the reason for the decision.
The association’s SG Ben Liyai said tenants will not pay rent until further notice adding the decision had been reached after the involvement of other stakeholders.
“LATAK directs all tenants not to pay rent until when President Uhuru Kenyatta orders businesses to resume normal operations,” Mr. Liyai said.
LATAK has also asked property owners not to harass anyone over rent dues and seek advice from the association on the occasion that they find it difficult to comply with the directive.
“All the landlords must forthwith stop evictions, harassment and disconnection of electricity and water to tenants,’’ Liyai added.
The organization also pleaded with the government to impose an embargo of at least six months on banks to bar them from following up on the loans being serviced by the landlords.
