The betting company got involved in a tussle with the government in 2019 over taxation, the bookmaker finding the new regulations unfavorable for its stay in the Kenyan market.
The national assembly recommended and later passed the hike in the excise tax rate from 10 to 20 percent Sportpesa finding it inimical.
The closure of its operations rendered more than 450 employees redundant thanks to the new tax regulations.
