2019 ended with some notable individuals passing on and who many will live to remember.
1.) Binyavanga Wainaina
Prior to his death, Binyavanga was a celebrated author, many a time getting himself in controversies due to the solid affection he had for the gay community, him being one. He died of stroke in the Nairobi’s Aga Khan Hospital, aged 48 years.
2.) Jonathan Moi
Jonathan was the eldest of the former president Mzee Moi. He shone in the 80s and 90s when he was the top in rally driving, a discipline he made a name out of. He died of an illness perceived to be a cancer of the pancreas.
3.) Joe Kadenge
One of the known pioneers in the Kenyan football breathed his last in July 2019 after a prolonged illness. He had played for the national team for a decade and a half after when he hang the boots. He died aged 84 years. His son Oscar Kadenge followed his steps, at one point playing for the AFC Leopards, the soccer giants in the Kenya Premier League.
4.) John De’Mathew
The Kikuyu benga star died in a deadly accident at Blue-post, along Thika Superhighway. His car rammed into a truck on the highway dying on spot. De’Matthew was from Thika in the hours of the night when he tragically met his sudden end.
5.) Bob Collymore
Kenyans on the 1st of July woke to the sad news of passing on of an incredible corporate captain after he succumbed to a condition of blood, which was said to be Myeloid Leukemia. Collymore was the head of the prolific telco giant Safaricom which he led since 2010 until his demise. He passed peacefully at his Kitisuru home.
7.) Ken Okoth
Ken died a few days after getting back from abroad where he had sought advanced medical attention. He was suffering from colorectal cancer which had led to multiple organ failure in his body. He died at the Nairobi Hospital.
8.) Joyce Laboso
She also died at the Nairobi Hospital where she was rushed after getting back from the United States. She died of cancer, her death marked as the third after Bob Collymore and Ken Okoth who also succumbed to different forms of cancer. She died aged 58 years.
9.) Tob Cohen
This hit headlines in the month of September. Cohen who was a billionaire and a renowned golf organizer had been reported missing in August, his lifeless body coming to be found a few weeks later inside a septic tank found inside a septic tank in his Kitusuru home. His wife Sarah Cohen was arrested as the major suspect to aid in investigations into the death.
10.) Charles Rubia
He closed the chapter of prominent and known Kenyans to have died in 2019. He died presumably out of breathing complications aged 96 years. Rubia was among the key players to ignite the pro-multiparty politics in the 90s. He served in parliament and also held ministerial positions in the KANU government then.
