Notorious Motorbike Thief Seeks Refuge at Maternity Ward, Saved by Police from Bloodthirsty Mob

On Tuesday, April 4, 2023, a robbery suspect, identified as Mwita Daudi Marwa, sought refuge at a hospital in Kuria West, Migori County, after being chased by an angry mob of boda boda riders. According to reports, Marwa is believed to be a notorious motorcycle thief.

The drama unfolded when the suspect leaped into the Mother & Child hospital and took refuge in a delivery room, causing panic among the parturient mothers who were heavy in labour. The nurses on duty were torn between releasing the suspect to the angry mob or risking the lives of their patients by keeping him in the facility.

Fortunately, a contingent of police officers who were conducting patrols in the town heard the commotion and rushed to the scene. They managed to enter the hospital and sneak the suspect out via the roof to avoid a confrontation with the mob that had jammed the entrance. The officers escorted the suspect to their vehicle and attempted to leave the scene, but the determined mob blocked their path and started pelting the vehicle with stones and other projectiles.

In response, the officers deployed teargas to disperse the crowd and restore normalcy. However, the OCS Kehancha police station suffered injuries on his left ankle during the rescue mission, and the police vehicle returned to the station with several dents and a missing windscreen. The hospital’s ambulance was also extensively damaged, and several windowpanes in the main building were smashed.

Despite the chaos, nobody was injured in the hospital, and operations resumed as usual with several officers left behind to keep guard. Meanwhile, the suspect is currently in custody and being processed for arraignment.
