Lesotho’s Prime Minister Thomas Thabane will be charged with the murder of his ex-wife Lipolelo Thabane.
This is according to the country’s Deputy Police Commissioner Paseka Mokete. According to him, Thabane is expected to appear at the Maseru Magistrates Court today.
Thabane recently announced on the radio that he would step down at the end of July following pressure from his party’s executive council. They argued that he could not stay in office with a murder charge hanging over his head.
I have served my country diligently. I’ve worked for a peaceful and stable Lesotho. Today…at my age, I have lost most of my energy…I hereby retire as prime minister with effect from the end of July.Thomas Thabane
Maesaiah Thabane, Thomas’ current wife, was arrested this month and charged with ordering the murder but is currently free on bail. The First Lady fled Lesotho on 10th January 2020, to avoid being arrested after a warrant of arrest was issued on the same day. She returned to the country in February and handed herself to the police in the African kingdom’s capital, Maseru.
The murder was initially blamed on unknown armed men but new evidence was filed in court in January. It is this new evidence that saw Maesaiah as a new suspect involved in the murder.
