President Uhuru Kenyatta has directed flying of the national flag half-mast from Saturday, June 13, in honor of the late Pierre Nkurunziza who passed on on Monday, June 8.
The period will last until the late president is interred.
The honor is attributed to the friendship President Kenyatta had fostered with the fallen head of state who reports intimate he was slated to be flown to Nairobi for specialized treatment after being taken ill.
The late Nkurunziza’s wife, Denise, flew back to Bujumbura on Wednesday after weeks of treatment in Nairobi after she was found to have contracted the Covid-19 virus.
Mourning Nkuruzniza, President Kenyatta termed him as an outstanding regional counterpart who served his country with distinction as Head of State and Government and worked tirelessly for the peace and stability of his country and the Great Lakes Region.
The State House reports in Bujumbura had pointed at ‘cardiac arrest’ as the cause of the death though their emerged other unconfirmed reports of the late leader having succumbed to coronavirus.
