An Isiolo court has allowed police to detain a man suspected to have links with Somalia-based terror group Al-Shabaab.
The suspect, Faud Omar Maalim, was seized by detectives on Sunday at Makutano area, Meru Town. This is following a tip-off from the public that he was a suspected returnee from Somalia.
Police on Tuesday sought more time to interrogate the suspect and forward his mobile phone to analysts to establish if he has any links with the Al-Shabaab terrorist group.
Fredrick Ouma, the investigating officer, opposed a release on bail or bond noting that investigations will cover Nairobi, Garissa, and Mandera counties.
Isiolo Principal Magistrate Evanson Ngigi acknowledged the police’s need for more time for investigations but directed that they should be concluded in five days before taking a plea.
The magistrate also ordered the police to ensure that the suspect is provided with medical care and be taken to Isiolo Referral Hospital if a situation came up. This decision was made after the court considered the asthmatic state of the suspect.
Faud Omar, who operates a car wash in Meru Town, said that he only worked in Qatar for two years.
