Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has now come out to say that he is unable to financially support himself or his family.
This comes after the Assets Recovery Agency (ARA) requested the court to freeze five of his bank accounts following claims of suspicious transactions believed to be linked to the theft of money from the county government.
The governor has accounts at Diamond Trust Bank, National Bank, Equity Bank, Bank of Africa, and Kenya Commercial Bank.
Sonko filed an application through his lawyer, Harrison Kinyanjui, that ARA suspended his accounts without an appropriate court order.
He claims that the agency used an order issued on December 11, 2019, to freeze his accounts despite expiring 14 days later. Kinyanjui said that the agency’s persistence to freeze his accounts without following due process was a violation of the constitution.
Sonko now claims that he is financially grounded and cannot support himself or his family.
The governor is currently awaiting the final verdict of his case in court while being barred from accessing his office.
