Four Police Officers Fired After Killing Black Man in Minneapolis

Four police officers have been fired following the death of an unarmed black man who was arrested in Minneapolis.

The black man, identified as George Floyd, had been arrested on Monday outside a deli on suspicion of forgery. Videos of the arrest, however, showed how police used excessive force to subdue him. One of the four officers was seen kneeling on Floyd’s neck as he cried out that he couldn’t breathe.

My stomach hurts. My neck hurts. Everything hurts. … (I need) water or something. Please. Please. I can’t breathe, officer. I cannot breathe. I cannot breathe

Bystanders, who were pleading with the officers to stop using excessive force, later noticed that Floyd wasn’t moving. An ambulance brought Floyd to Hennepin Healthcare where he later died.

Police initially reported that Floyd was resisting arrest but new video obtained by CBS News proved that he did not resist being apprehended from the beginning. This was also backed up by restaurant owner Rashad West who witnessed the arrest.

Several protesters gathered in Minneapolis on Tuesday evening to demand justice for Floyd. Activists had blocked traffic for several blocks in every direction, and the crowd spilt out into the streets. Some were seen carrying signs that read “I can’t breathe” and “Prosecute the police”.
