The embattled Nairobi Governor can’t seem to catch a break as talks of his impeachment have resurfaced once again.
Debate on Sonko’s impeachment resurfaced on Friday after Nominated Member of Parliament Maina Kamanda asked the Nairobi County Assembly Members to follow Kiambu County’s example and impeach the current Nairobi Governor. Kamanda was speaking during the swearing-in of James Nyoro as the new Governor of Kiambu County.
He asked them to “send the thief home or to Shimo La Tewa”.
Tunawaambia MCAs wa Nairobi waangalie vile MCAs wa Kiambu wamefanya…Waondoe huyo mwizi aende Nyumbani, waondoe huyo mwizi aende nyumbani ama arudi Shimo la tewaMaina Kamanda
Ferdinard Waititu was removed from his office as Kiambu Governor on Wednesday by the Senate on three separate charges. The charges were Gross Violation of the Constitution & Public Finance Management Act, Crimes Under the National Law and Gross Misconduct/Abuse of office.
Waititu also has a pending case in court after being charged with corruption-related charges alongside his wife Susan Wangari and eight other county employees.
Sonko, too, has a pending case in court alongside other county employees over alleged graft of Ksh 357 million. Plans by MCAs to impeach the Nairobi Governor have been brought up on several occasions.
Nominated Ward Mary Njambi in January alleged that there is a plan by 30 MCAs to kick Sonko out of office.
Those people who want to introduce the impeachment motion are those who have been here all along but now have a problem with the governor because he has sealed all the loopholes of money getting to them. We will not allow such a thing. The governor has no case to answerMary Njambi
A move to court by George Bush and Lawrence Oyugito stop Sonko’s impeachment proved futile as High Court Judge Weldon Korir declined to stop his removal from office. The judge asked them to file a formal application on impeachment instead of making it verbally as they did.
Jubilee Secretary Raphael Tuju has gone on live TV to claim that should an impeachment motion be put forward, it would be difficult to support the Nairobi Governor. Tuju noted that there are actions that are beyond the party and things have to be taken the way they come.
With Waititu voted out by senators from his political party and Jubilee members are calling for the Nairobi Governor’s impeachment, Sonko might have to prepare himself for the worst.
