Drug Dealer Pleads Guilty To Selling Dose That Killed Michael K. Williams

The man responsible for selling Michael K. Williams the drugs that led to his untimely death has pleaded guilty to his crimes. Williams, best known for his role in the HBO series The Wire, passed away in September 2021 due to an accidental drug overdose of a combination of heroin, cocaine, fentanyl, and p-fluorofentanyl.

According to prosecutors, the actor had purchased heroin laced with fentanyl from a Brooklyn-based drug dealer in a “hand-to-hand transaction” just a day before his death. Irvin Cartagena, also known as “Green Eyes,” has now pleaded guilty to conspiring to distribute heroin, fentanyl, and fentanyl analog. Cartagena was a member of a drug trafficking organization that operated mainly in Williamsburg from August 2020 to February 2022.

“Irvin Cartagena sold fentanyl-laced heroin in broad daylight in New York City, feeding addiction and causing tragedy,” said US Attorney Damian Williams. “In doing so, he dealt the fatal dose that killed Michael K. Williams. This Office and our law enforcement partners will continue to hold accountable the dealers who push this poison, exploit addiction, and cause senseless death in our community.”

Prosecutors also revealed that Cartagena and his co-conspirators continued to sell their fatal product even after learning that it killed Williams. The Brooklyn-based dealers sold their product in broad daylight amidst residential apartment buildings in Brooklyn and Manhattan.

After pleading guilty in federal court on Wednesday (April 5), Cartagena faces a sentence of anywhere between five to 40 years in prison. As part of his guilty plea, Cartagena admitted that the substances he conspired to distribute resulted in the death of Michael K. Williams.

The tragedy of Williams’ death serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of drug addiction and the importance of holding drug dealers accountable for their actions.
