United States President Donald Trump has finally released a press statement following the Iran missile strikes in the wee hours of Wednesday morning.
The president made his first televised remarks since Iran fired more than two dozen missiles at two Iraqi bases that house US troops.
Trump confirmed that there were no US or Iraqi casualties. He went on to say that Iran “appeared to be standing down” after the strikes.
Rather than retaliating with force, the US president announced that the US will impose tougher economic sanctions on Iran, adding that the days of tolerating Iran’s hostile behaviour are over.
Some US officials have disclosed that the Iranian military may have been intentionally shooting to miss so as to save face at home. This has been related to the statements made by the Iranian president who promised retaliation after the death of General Qassem Soleimani.
Iranian foreign minister Javad Zarif characterized its actions Wednesday morning as defensive, writing on Twitter that “we do not seek an escalation of war, but will defend ourselves against any aggression.”
