The newly appointed Agriculture CS Peter Munya took Kenyans by a surprise after claiming that locusts will soon die of old age.
He claims the insects will age and are no longer a threat to vegetation and crops. While addressing residents in Gakurune Primary School in Meru, Munya was specific that locusts of the yellow color will succumb to cold weather and old age.
The former Meru governor was accompanied by Meru Agriculture Director Dionisio Meruaki and Igoji East MCA John Kireria among other county officials.
They are in yellow color. That means they are old locusts. They are no longer a threat to crops. They are now after a breeding place to lay their eggs.Cs Munya referring to Locusts
The CS further stated that locusts’ eggs do not survive on a tree. Locusts often lay eggs on the ground or alternatively on a tree where the chances of survival are minimal.
The areas that have so far reported locust infestation include Gitine, Kathigu,Kianjogu and Mweru.
They are many, they have painted the trees yellow, even the trees are sagging due to the weight.Igoji MCA Kireria
The ministry dispatched a group of 21 youths who have been put under training to spray the insects.
Munya said the locusts can as well serve as food and anyone with the ability to trap them is free to eat them.
The only problem is we have sprayed them. They were sprayed at Tseikuru(Kitui). The best thing is to let them die.Munya added
