Afro-jazz Star Manu Dibango Succumbs to Coronavirus

Veteran Cameroonian Afro-jazz star Manu Dibango has passed away on Tuesday after he contracted the coronavirus.

The 86-year-old veteran was recovering at a hospital outside of Paris after he was tested positive. News of his death was confirmed by his family via a Facebook post.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the loss of Manu Dibango, our Papy Groove, who passed away on 24 March 2020, at 86 years old, because of Covid-19

The family noted that the funeral service will be a private affair and that a tribute memorial would be organized later.

His funeral service will be held in strict privacy, and a tribute to his memory will be organized when possible

The saxophonist was one of the pioneers of Afro-jazz and also fused funk with traditional Cameroonian music.

Dibango’s death comes at a time where Africa’s number of confirmed number of coronavirus cases stands at well over 1000 and the death toll at just over 20.
