Government officials have briefed Kenyans on the state of the coronavirus in the country on Saturday following the first confirmation on Friday.
Health Chief Administrative Secretary Mercy Mwangangi has said that 22 people who were in close contact with the infected person have been quarantined at Mbagathi hospital.
Samples from the 22 people are currently being tested at the Kenya Medical Research Institute laboratories. The Health Ministry added that 23 people of mixed nationalities who travelled with the patients were traced and advised to self-quarantine for 14 days.
Dr Mwangangi said that the people were identified through the flight manifest and were not in the country. The response team, which was created by President Kenyatta, will follow up on the cases and update the public daily.
A team from the Health Ministry was reported to have fumigated the building of the first coronavirus patient in Ongata Rongai, Kajiado County.
Government Spokesperson Cyrus Oguna said that a Detection Committee was created under the National Emergency Response Committee.
The committee consists of representatives of the World Health Organization, Amref, Kenya Red Cross, the CDC, University of Nairobi, World Bank Group, the Kenya Private Sector Alliance, and the county and national governments.
Our preparedness is at the highest level possible but we cannot get to 100 per cent if we do not involve the people. Therefore every Kenyan must be involved in preventionCyrus Oguna
Oguna also refuted the claims that the viral video of the woman claiming to be free of the virus was not patient zero. The government has now warned Kenyans against spreading fake news on the Coronavirus in the country.
We have initiated a process to track down individuals spreading fake news. I am not only referring to the video of the lady which is already in our possession but we also are tracking down fake news and alerts being issued in the publicCyrus Oguna
